Hey, I’m Dionne and I am so glad you stopped by my blog, Homeschooling Twinkies. Welcome!
About me (quick version):
I am a mama of twin boys, wife to a sailor, ex-math teacher, a coffee addict and wine lover. I am extremely sarcastic (I’m trying hard to dial that back) and a complete neat freak. I hail from New York, but have settled these last 20 years in Virginia.
Here are some of my favorite things I enjoy:
Days of Our Lives (I know, I know), The entire Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, NY Times Sunday crossword puzzles, dark chocolate, crocheting, dark roasted coffee, merlot, and, did I mention dark chocolate already? Plus, I love a good laugh, see!
Here are some of my least favorite things:
Having my picture taken, the smell of cinnamon, the beach, and procrastination.
About me and my family (longer version):
I was born and raised in Yonkers, New York. My dad named me after Dionne Warwick, the singer. He just loved her songs. By the way, on my fifteenth birthday, my dad and I were utterly shocked to find out that Dionne and I shared the same birthday. I asked my dad if he did that on purpose and he swore to me that he had no idea. Crazy, right?
I come from a huge family…I mean, HUGE! My maternal grandmother alone had 14 kids. That’s a lot of cousins! I also have a few siblings….I’m the oldest of 7. Here are a few of them.
Starting A Family
After high school and a short stint in college, I did a lot of moving around. In 1997, I landed in Orlando, Florida with my mom. It was here that I met my hubby, Jason. He was in the navy about to be transferred to Virginia and I was soooo not looking for a relationship. Funny how that works. A few months later, we eloped and have been together ever since.
In 2004, seven years into our childless marriage, we finally tried IVF. You can read our infertility story here. And, as you may have guessed, it was a success! In 2005, we welcomed our twin boys, Jack & Josh, or as I like to call them, our Twinkies. Here are a couple of pics.
Yes, they are red-headed and no, I have no idea how. They are my shiny, copper-headed examples of dominant recessive genes.
And I couldn’t go on without mentioning our latest member to our family, Sammie. She’s such a good ‘sister’ to the boys.
In 2008, we learned that Joshua had autism. It was hard news to take at first but it also explained so much that we were observing in his behavior. Since then, we have all learned to embrace his autism. We live in his world and it is amazing! You can read more here about how he embraces and owns his autism.
So, we have been a military family for over 20 years and have had our fair share of deployments. It’s a tough life but Jason loves his job and loves being on a ship. Here he is, below, having just come home from his latest deployment.
So Why Blog?
I started Homeschooling Twinkies in 2015 after about two years into homeschooling. When I started homeschooling four years ago, I knew absolutely nothing about it. I spent the summer of 2013 freaking out scouring the internet trying to find the perfect curriculum, looking for any and all resources that would help guide me. Basically, I was looking for anything that would keep me from screwing up my kids. As the months passed by, I realized that there wasn’t a perfect curriculum or a perfect method of teaching. I learned to chill out and see homeschooling for what it is: a once-in-a-lifetime amazing journey that I get to take with my kids. With that, Homeschooling Twinkies was born.
Here, I get to share with you our homeschooling experience as well as extras like organizing, DIY/Crafts, and money tips. I, also, like creating lots of printables so don’t forget to sign up for my newsletter and never miss out on a freebie. You can also follow us along at:
I hope you enjoy our stories and find some helpful and others fun.
